A 19-year-old woman allegedly murdered her boyfriend on New Year’s Eve, according to police in Baytown, Texas.
ABC News reports that Yvonne Raquel Ramirez has been charged with the murder of Joshua McKinney during an attempted robbery on the 100 block of Mizell Street early Sunday morning. According to Houston, Texas ABC station KTRK, McKinney and the teenage mother of one had recently begun dating.
Harris County prosecutors believe Ramirez hatched a plan to steal McKinney’s guns and then demanded $2000 for the return of the weapons. When the young couple met on Mizell Street in Baytown things took a turn for the worse.
According to witness reports, McKinney allegedly grabbed Ramirez in a choke-hold and put a pistol to her head. At that point, the witness ran to call police and later heard gunfire.
When authorities arrived, they found McKinney dead in the street and Ramirez suffering from a gunshot wound to her shoulder.
Ramirez claimed self-defense, first telling officers the gun dropped, fired and killed McKinney. Later, she reportedly changed her story, telling investigators she actually grabbed the gun and shot McKinney in self-defense.
However, other witnesses reported seeing Ramirez attempting to adjust McKinney’s body and prosecutors allege she stole McKinney’s wallet as he lay dying in the street.
According to ABC13, Ramirez is currently being held in the medical unit of the Harris County jail as she heals from her gunshot wound. She is being held on a $50,000 bond and is scheduled to appear before a judge on January 3.
