The teen at the center of a scandal that landed former U.S. Rep. Anthony Weiner behind bars is now tied to another case that has resulted in criminal charges against a former teacher.
According to the New York Post, 54-year-old Jonathan Busch was arrested on Thursday and faces charges including statutory rape. He has since been released on bond.
The nature of his contact with the girl and his alleged crimes were not available in initial media reports, but police say the interactions began in 2016 when the girl was under 15. She is now 18 years old.
Busch had been employed as a teacher at Lake Norman High School in Moorseville, North Carolina, though school officials say the teen was not a student at that school. The alleged crimes did not occur on the school campus, according to a statement.
“Though the charges against Mr. Busch are extremely serious, I can assure you that the alleged incidents did not occur on the campus of Lake Norman High School nor involved any current or former Lake Norman High School students,” read a letter to parents of students at the school.
Reports indicate the teen is the same girl who exchanged sexually explicit text messages with prominent New York Democratic politician Anthony Weiner.
After previous sexting scandals presented career setbacks, Weiner was sentenced to 21 months behind bars for exchanging messages with an underage girl in 2016.
WSOC spoke to legal and child advocacy expertsTeacher , including the executive director of Alliance for Children.
Erin Weatherford-Farmer said reports of one girl being involved in multiple sexual abuse scandals is not surprising, adding that they “are so vulnerable at that point.”
