Authorities in Tennessee say the drowning deaths of young twins recently appear to be the result of a tragic accident.
According to ABC News, the siblings were in the care of a babysitter last week when they somehow fell into a pool at the home.
A statement from the Knox County Sheriff’s Office indicates the brother and sister were both rushed to an area hospital on Friday after they were retrieved from the water.
The babysitter reported that she stepped away to let another child enter the home and discovered the twins were missing a few moments later. After searching the perimeter, she said she found them both in the deep end of the pool.
Though the owner of the registered day care was not a licensed child-care provider, state law allowed her to care for up to four children.
“At this point, it is our understanding that she was not in violation of that when the incident at the pool occurred,” said Sky Arnold of the Tennessee Department of Human Services.
Upon arrival at East Tennessee Children’s Hospital, the girl was pronounced dead.
Her brother was initially listed in critical condition and had been placed on life support. An update from WATE indicated that the male twin died Sunday afternoon.
Both children were just shy of their second birthdays.
The Department of Children’s Services has joined the an investigation authorities say remains ongoing.
