CrimeOnline has obtained exclusive video taken on the scene of a fatal police-involved shooting last month in the Los Angeles area.
As Buzzfeed reports, the Los Angeles Police Department has confirmed that a female hostage was killed on June 16 in Van Nuys when officers were attempting to subdue and apprehend a suspect wielding a knife. LAPD had responded to a 911 call from a witness at the church who had seen the suspect, Guillermo Perez, and believed he was a threat.
As described in an LAPD incident video, when responding officers confronted the suspect, then carrying a knife and a metal chair, he ignored their orders to drop the knife and they fired bean bag rounds at him. He then retreated a grabbed a woman standing nearby, appearing to cut her throat with the knife. Three officers then fired at both the suspect and the hostage, hitting them both.
Crime Stories producer Alan Duke was on the scene in Van Nuys immediately after the police-involved shooting, and spoke to eyewitnesses who saw the suspect take the woman hostage and described the two deaths as a “double homicide.” Both the man and the woman, identified as 49-year-old Elizabeth Tollison, were pronounced dead at a nearby hospital shortly after the shooting.
“Tragically, this is another case where officers were forced to make split-second decisions based on the actions of a violent individual,” Los Angeles Police Chief Michel Moore told reporters Tuesday.
“This was a tense situation that unfolded very quickly and it’s every officer’s worse nightmare.”
