Gunman opens fire on apartment, kills sleeping 7-year-old boy, wounds his mother

An unknown gunman opened fire into a Florida apartment Wednesday morning, killing a 7-year-old boy and wounding his mother while they were sleeping.

Riviera Beach Police Chief Nathan Osgood said another child and the children’s father were also at home sleeping but were not hit by the gunfire, WFLX reported.

The boy and the mother, identified as 28-year-old Addiscia Ball, were taken to a nearby hospital, but the child died from his injuries.

Police did not release the boy’s name, but family and friends identified him as Dexter Fergusson, affectionately known as “Peanut.”

“I am really going to miss him so much” Ball told CBS12.

Both Ball and her son were shot multiple times. As for her other son, a 5-year-old, Ball said he was traumatized.

“I don’t think he understands his brother is gone and not coming back, that his best friend is not here anymore,” she said.

Osgood said at least one assailant fired into the home and that police were called to the same address for a verbal dispute Tuesday afternoon. He said there was no indication that dispute would escalate.

Police said he attended Dr Mary McLeod Bethune Elementary School. Officials there said grief counselors would be available at the school this week, WPTV reported.
