An Alabama teacher has pleaded guilty to having sexual contact with three different students.
According to AL.com, Ashley Parkins Pruitt turned herself into authorities in 2014, and was later charged with multiple felonies, including counts of sex acts with a student and distributing pornography to a minor.
The now 30-year-old teacher reportedly sent explicit photos of herself to one of the students, and had explicit conversations with them on Snapchat. All three were student athletes at Locus Fork High School in Blount County, and all were between the ages of 16-18. The incidents reportedly took place between August and October 2014.
Blount County District Attorney Pamela Casey addressed the sex abuse case in a statement obtained by AL.com, expressing her relief that the case would not go to trial.
I am pleased we were able to resolve this case before trial. These three boys have already been subjected to enough public scrutiny as a result of Ms. Pruitt’s actions. It is not easy for victims of sexual predators to appear at trial to discuss such personal and private matters with 12 jurors and a room full of spectators.
Once again, I would like to remind parents of the dangers of social media and smartphones. This is just one more example of an adult, this time a teacher, using social media to sexually exploit a child. Sadly- this teacher’s actions make all teachers look bad. That shouldn’t be the case. Blount County has so many great teachers.
As part of her plea agreement, Pruitt was sentenced to 15 years in prison but will only have to serve three – and two of those will be under house arrest. She will now be registered as a sex offender and will have to give up her teaching license permanently.
