A man with special needs has killed his mother and severely injured his father in Bridgewater, New Jersey.

According to CBS Local, the unidentified suspect stabbed both his parents in the family’s home on Monday evening, and barricaded himself and his father in the home as police and the SWAT team responded to the scene.

Police have not yet revealed the names of the victims or the suspect, and it is unclear how authorities were first alerted to the incident. The suspect’s mother was reportedly pronounced dead at the scene, and it appears that the father was stabbed by the time the county SWAT team arrived at 9:30 p.m. Monday.

The father and son were locked in the house until 1 a.m., when the suspect surrendered. It is not yet known what type of special needs he has.

Two neighbors refused to comment on the incident when approached by reporters at MyCentralNewJersey.com, while another neighbor said, “they were nice people.”

The suspect is now in police custody and the father is in stable condition at a hospital.
