A gunman opened fire at an San Diego apartment complex where residents were hosting a birthday party.
According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, seven adults were shot and one woman was killed after a gunman sitting in a poolside lounge chair began shooting at a group of revelers at an upscale apartment complex in La Jolla, a waterfront community within the city of San Diego.
San Diego Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman told the Los Angeles Times that the gunman, identified as Peter Selis, 49, pointed a gun at police when they arrived at the scene. Officers shot and killed the man, who was a resident at the apartment complex. The newspaper reports that at least one attendee of the birthday party was also a resident at the La Jolla Crossroads apartment complex.
The six surviving victims either remain in critical condition or are in surgery. The deceased female victim has not yet been identified, and died after being transported to the hospital.
Witnesses told reporters that most of the attendees of the party were African-American, and that the shooter, who is white, remained eerily calm as he opened fire.
“He had his beer in one hand and his gun in the other,” a witness told KFMB-TV. “There were two victims lying on the ground, one trying to crawl toward the other one to help.”
Two other witnesses were in the jacuzzi when the gunman opened fire, and told the news station they later heard him speaking to young women who were trying to aid an injured friend.
“You can either leave or you can stay here and die,” the gunman reportedly said to the women.
It is not yet known if Selis knew any of the victims, and a motive for the shooting is unclear. Records obtained by the Los Angeles Times show that Selis filed for bankruptcy in 2015, and listed his occupation as a car mechanic in the filing papers.
He reportedly had two children and a stepson.
