Police: Stranger’s ‘totally unprovoked’ sucker punch kills father of five

A husband and father is dead after a complete stranger delivered a single, fatal blow to his head, according to Las Vegas police.

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department described the attack allegedly carried out by James Beach on Luis Campos as “totally unprovoked.” On Sunday, Beach, 27, was charged with one count of open murder for punching Campos, 45, in the face. According to KLAS, father of five was knocked out and died on Thursday—never regaining consciousness.

People reported that the fatal incident occurred after 1:30 am on April 30 as Campos and his younger brother, Drake Garibay, 30, stood outside a bar. Police claimed the pair traveled to Las Vegas from California for another brother’s wedding and were at his bachelor’s party on the night in question.

“The taller guy walked right up to my brother’s face and said something like, ‘What are you looking at?’” Garibay told the Las Vegas Review-Journal. “And he just struck my brother once. The whole thing was like, three, four seconds long.”

Garibay said that his brother didn’t get to say anything before he was struck. He also told the Review-Journal that another man beside Beach was present at the time. Police mentioned that another man involved in the fatal incident was questioned but will not face charges.

“He [Beach] robbed my husband of a beautiful life that we had and we were building together and my beautiful children of their father who know they are never going to know him,” the victim’s wife, Julie Campos, told KLAS.

A GoFundMe campaign was started on Friday to help care for the five kids Luis left behind.

Beach supposedly served time for attempted murder and battery with a deadly weapon in connection with a separate case. KTNV reported that he is currently being held at the Clark County Detention Center.
