The search for a missing eight-year-old girl whose mother was murdered this month has ended with the discovery of her body in a remote area in South Carolina.
According to WSPA, Iyana Lowery, 8, was found dead near McColl, South Carolina on Sunday, and investigators positively identified her body on Tuesday.
“The body was recovered in an area off New Bridge Road,” Marlboro County Sheriff Charles Lemon told WSPA. “The body was identified by Marlboro County Coroner Tim Brown through DNA records.”
As Crime Online previously reported, the little girl had been missing since May 5, the same day police found her mother Ella Lowery, stabbed to death in a home in Bennettsville.
Police have since arrested Jejauncey Fernando Harrington, for Ella’s murder and, Iyana’s kidnapping. He reportedly was not cooperating with the police and would not say anything about the missing little girl.
Another suspect was initially arrested and charged with the killing, but the charges were later dropped.
Police connected Harrington to the murder through DNA found at the crime scene. Iyana’s DNA was also found in his car.
Investigators have determined that Harrington and Ella Lowery knew each other.
WSPA reports that investigators received information that led them to discover Iyana’s body, but the details are not known.
The coroner reportedly ruled Iyana’s death a homicide but has not yet released the specific cause of death.
Harrington is expected to be charged with the little girl’s murder.
