A former California sheriff’s deputy, who stole marijuana seized during raids, has now issued a public apology, in which he claimed his actions were the result of ‘Satan’ playing games with him.
“I’m sorry to everybody – to my family, my friends, to the community, the sheriff’s department, and everybody else,” Logan August, 30, said in a nearly 7 minute YouTube video posted earlier this month. “This is despicable, this is embarrassing…there’s really no words to describe it.”
According to the Los Angeles Times, August stole marijuana from a Kern County Sheriff’s Office storage unit multiple times in 2014. The marijuana had previously been seized by police from illegal grow operations on private and public properties.
August, who conspired with another former deputy and police detective, gave the marijuana to a confidential informant to sell. He then received a $15,000 cut of the sales, federal prosecutors said.
August had worked for the sheriff’s office since 2007.
“I made a horrible decision…I made that decision based on Satan playing games with me and making me feel like I was prideful and unable to go to family members for help,” August said in the video while sitting next to his wife.
“I accept 100 percent whatever I have done,” he went on to say, adding that he will use this situation as a learning experience.
August and the other deputy involved have agreed to forfeit any money they earned from the trafficking operation. They both pleaded guilty in federal court to conspiracy to distribute and possess with the intent to distribute marijuana.
August could face up to 5 years in prison and a $250,000 fine, though his attorney.
