A Warren County, Utah, woman is accused of leaving her two young kids in the trunk of her car while she went shopping on Thursday.
The Deseret News reported that police were called to a Riverdale Wal-Mart by a witness who claimed they saw Tori Lee Castillo, 39, lock the children in the trunk and leave to shop.
Riverdale police Lt. Casey Warren claimed the 2- and 5-year-old made noise and shook the vehicle, grabbing the attention of other patrons.
“Several good Samaritans observed this and came to the aid of the children,” Lt. Warren commented.
Onlookers helped by instructing the 5-year-old to pull an emergency latch located in the trunk to escape, according to KSL.
Officers interviewed and arrested the mom of two upon returning from her Wal-Mart run.
Lt. Warren said child welfare got involved following the incident and the children were put in the care of a responsible party, according to the Associated Press.
As of Saturday, the 39-year-old remained in the Weber County Jail on suspicion of child abuse charges.
