A San Antonio, Texas, mother was fatally shot at a gas station while her young daughter sat in the back seat.
KENS reported that police found an unresponsive woman at a Citgo gas station at approximately 10:45 pm Saturday. The victim, who was shot in the stomach, was transported to a nearby hospital in serious condition. She later died from her injuries.
The Medical Examiner’s Office later identified the victim as Summer Perez, 25, according to the San Antonio Express-News.
The San Antonio Police Department (SAPD) said they believe a man in a white SUV drove in front of the mom of two’s car while she was filling up, rolled down his passenger side window, and fired a single, fatal shot. The suspect then fled the scene, according to WOAI.
Police also located Perez’s 18-month-old daughter in the back seat. Fortunately, the girl wasn’t harmed.
“By the time we got there, they wouldn’t let us see her,” the victim’s mother, Debbie, told the station. “By the time they let us see her, the doctor came in and told us that she had already passed away.”
“She was trying so hard to better her life for her kids.”
The station also reported early Sunday that witnesses claimed they didn’t hear any argument or incident prior to the shooting.
The SAPD described the suspect as an African-American male. They are still investigating what motivated the man to shoot the 25-year-old. KENS reported that authorities indicated the victim and suspect might have known each other and a “prior incident” possibly brought about the shooting.
