A Florida man is behind bars after he reportedly stole a boat on Saturday and later crashed it onto Daytona Beach.
WFTV reports that Jonathan Race, 20, is accused of breaking into the Daytona Marina & Boat Works a little before 4:45 a.m. on Saturday and stealing Ethel Jeanne, a 36-foot boat. Paperwork found inside the boat indicated it was being stored at the marina for repairs.
According to the Daytona Beach Police, Race crashed the boat onto the beach at full-speed before fleeing scene. The suspect left his driver’s license, a pair of sunglasses, and a cellphone in the boat, which led officers to his Port Orange home.
When confronted, Race said he didn’t remember anything about the incident. In fact, he claimed, he didn’t remember anything at all after drinking a few ‘Four Loko’ drinks that he bought at a 7-Eleven convenience store near his.
Four Loko is the name of an alcoholic energy drink that was once banned in several states for its strong ingredients.
Race told officers that he woke up after a “black out” and found himself on Daytona Beach without any knowledge of how he got there. When authorities noticed he wasn’t wearing any shorts, he said he woke up with a pair of blue shorts on that weren’t his. He took them off and walked home.
Race was arrested on grand theft and burglary charges and booked into the Volusia County Jail. His bail was set at $8,500.
