A 5-year-old boy in Jackson, Mississippi, is dead after accidentally shooting himself in his family home on Saturday, police confirm.
The Clarion-Ledger reports that Jackson Police Department Cmdr. Tyree Jones said that shooting occurred around 10:30 a.m. on Saturday morning at 3720 Cromwell St. When police arrived, they determined that the boy accidentally shot himself in the face.
“We investigated the incident on scene,” Jones said. “We’ve questioned the father of this individual and other people at the house at the time of the shooting. At this time it appears to be an accidental shooting and our hearts go out to the family.”
The child, identified as Jayden Pempleton, was rushed to Batson Children’s Hospital. He was pronounced dead shortly after. The parents have not been charged, but at this point, according to Jackson, authorities are still investigating.
“We’re still investigating. We have evidence we need to submit to the crime lab and we’ve taken statements from people on scene.”
