A Baltimore-area Spanish teacher is headed to jail after pleading guilty to having sex with an underage student.
According to the Baltimore Sun, Ekatherine Pappas, 25, a teacher at Franklin High School, pleaded guilty three counts of fourth-degree sex offense. As part of the plea bargain, prosecutors dropped the felony charge of sexual abuse of a minor.
According to the New York Post, Pappas was arrested earlier this year after police learned of a video recording, purportedly of the teacher and a 16-year-old student having a sexual encounter.
Pappas reportedly left the country for Bogota, Columbia, on the same day a warrant was issued for her arrest — but it is unclear if the trip was planned ahead of time. She was arrested at the airport a week later upon her return to the United States.
The student victim told police that Pappas had asked him to cut class and go to his house, where the assault took place. On one occasion, he said, Pappas took a video recording that would ultimately expose her crime.
“I cannot begin to explain the terror of being notified that my son had been sexually abused and it was on videotape that had been circulated throughout the school for others to see,” the victim’s father said in a statement to the court at Pappas’s sentencing.
“Our home is no longer viewed as a safe environment, since it is the location where the assault took place,” the father said.
