Two Danvers, Massachusetts, teens are facing charges after a video reportedly showed them placing a baby in a refrigerator and closing the door.
The mother of the 8-month-old told WBZ-TV that her 15-year-old niece and her 14-year-old friend watched the child for a half an hour while she showered. The woman was reportedly informed of the alleged Snapchat video by police.
The video (posted below) shows a baby crying before being placed inside a refrigerator by one of the girls. After closing the door, the teens are heard laughing as the girl continues to cry from inside the refrigerator.
The baby’s mother claimed the girls originally told her that they had reached into the refrigerator to get a bottle to soothe her crying daughter. She also said that the girls thought the stunt was a joke and that she doesn’t believe they intended to harm her baby.
“It was their stupidity. I feel like they learned a lesson and would never do it again. My niece is a good-hearted girl who wouldn’t hurt a fly,” she told WBZ-TV.
Speaking with WCVB, police sources confirmed the validity of the video and revealed that the pair were charged with child endangerment and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. The girls were arraigned in court Tuesday.
Despite the charges, the victim’s mother maintained that her niece is a good kid that acted foolishly.
“My daughter is OK. I want to let everyone know that I was not aware of the situation,” the mother’s child told WCVB.
“She didn’t do it trying to harm my daughter. She did it as playing around. I will no longer be leaving my children with my niece or her friends again ever in my life.”
The Department of Children and Families, Danvers Police, and the Essex County District Attorney’s Office are involved in the investigation.
