Mom drives drunk and crashes into a pole, killing her 7-year-old son: Police

Police have arrested a Houston, Texas, woman after she allegedly drove drunk and caused her 7-year-old son to be ejected from her vehicle last month, as reported by Click2Houston.

Authorities report that Edith Abrego, 29, is facing murder charges following the crash which killed the child. In addition to Jody Rodriguez’ death, Abrego and her 6-year-old son and 4-year-old daughter were hurt in the single-vehicle crash on July 7.

Charging documents accuse Abrego of being drunk when she got behind the wheel with her kids. KTRK reported that an initial investigation determined the mother was speeding when she hit a light pole and speed limit sign before flipping her Nissan. The vehicle landed in a party supply store’s parking lot, investigators have noted.

Authorities claim Rodriguez was thrown from the passenger side window and pronounced dead at the scene. Surveillance cameras captured the two other children exiting the car through broken windows. Video later showed an officer comforting Abrego as she cried next to her children.

Investigators noted the presence of an open bottle of alcohol in the Nissan. However, police emphasized that it could’ve opened during the collision.

It is unknown whether the kids were wearing a seatbelt at the time. Though they did recover one booster seat from the car, police said it’s unclear which kid was sitting in it. They also noted that all three children should’ve been in a car or booster seat, given their height and weight.

The mother and her two surviving children were reportedly hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries.

Abrego’s bond was set at $20,000.
