Two men who allegedly decided to rob a Maryland pub apparently picked the wrong place at the wrong time. The pub, known as a hangout for local law enforcement, was packed with police officers.
WBAL reports that two suspects, armed, walked into Monaghan’s Pub in Woodlawn on Tuesday, just before 5:30 p.m. Little did the suspects know that inside the pub, at the very moment they decided to hold it up, numerous off-duty police officers were celebrating another officer’s retirement.
According to police, the two suspects walked in through the take-out section of the pub. They reportedly pulled out guns and demanded the cashier give them money. Baltimore County police Officer Jennifer Peach said the suspects then turned towards the exit and attempted to flee, but they didn’t make far.
“At that time, the person who had been behind the counter knew that there was a retirement party for a police officer happening, so they went into the other portion and alerted the officers to the fact that they had just been involved in an armed robbery.”
The two men were identified as Joseph McInnis III, 21, and Tyree McCoy, 22. It’s unclear how much money they took from the store, but they were nonetheless booked and charged with armed robbery and possession of a handgun.
“I’m sure that they weren’t planning on there being a large room filled with police officers,” Peach added.
Both suspects remain behind bars at the Baltimore County Detention Center.
