An 8-year-old boy who was allegedly beaten by his mother’s ex-boyfriend with a hammer died Wednesday afternoon, as reported by KCRA.
According to The Sacramento Bee, Deandre Chaney Jr., 23, is accused of attacking the deceased child, his mother and his 7-year-old sister at their Sacramento home last Friday. Authorities apprehended Chaney in Nevada on Saturday as he traveled through the area on an Amtrak train.
Sacramento Police told KXTV that the suspect jumped off the train and spent a night in a shed prior to his arrest. Authorities were able to locate him by tracing his cell phone. Police claimed the suspect was heading to Utah when he was captured.
As CrimeOnline previously reported, the mother and her two children were rushed to the hospital in serious to critical condition. At the time, authorities cautioned that Cheney has an extensive criminal record and should be considered armed and dangerous.

Authorities believe the pair were arguing before Cheney carried out the depraved attack. Chaney allegedly stole his ex’s car and fled the scene. However, police recovered the abandoned vehicle prior to his arrest.
Court records reveal that Chaney pleaded no contest in April 2014 to a felony battery with serious bodily injury charge. He also pleaded no contest to failing to register as a sex offender in October 2016.
Chaney was booked into Humboldt County Jail. He is expected to be extradited to Sacramento County to face charges.
