A registered Missouri sex offender is behind bars after he allegedly raped and molested two young girls in August.
Springfield News-Reader reports that Dave Saffeels, 57, spent eight years in prison for molesting a 2-year-old toddler in 2002. Saffels, now out of prison, is accused of raping an 11-year-old girl three times last month. Saffels attacked the the victim at Cox South Hospital in Springfield, where she was visiting a woman who recently gave birth to twins. Apparently, the suspect knew the woman who gave birth, as well as the child.
According to a police report, the 11-year-old and a 2-year-old toddler ended up in a hospital room together at Cox South when Saffeels spotted them. The suspect reportedly approached the 11-year-old while she rested on a couch in the room. She told authorities that he started rubbing her upper leg, close to her groin area, then quickly snatched off her shorts and raped her. Saffeels then left the room, but reportedly returned a few hours later and performed oral sex on the 11-year-old.
The following morning, Saffeels found the girl alone in the same room again. The victim said he put on a pink condom, raped her again, then flushed the condom down the toilet. The girl said she stayed in the room and never told anyone because she was frightened.
Weeks later, Saffeels approached the girl while she showered alone with her in her own home, and asked her for sex. She refused and he allegedly raped her again.
Last week, Saffeels also allegedly sexually assaulted the 2-year-old toddler at her home. The mother of toddler said she woke up to the child screaming. When she questioned Saffeels on what happened, he said he needed to get to school and fled.
Later, while the mother bathed the toddler, the little girl started crying and said “ouch” and “no” while pointing to her groin area. The mother later told authorities she noticed the little girl’s diaper was crooked earlier that morning.
Police arrested Saffeels on Friday during a traffic stop. When confronted with the charges, the suspect denied the accusations and said the 11-year-old saw a photo of his penis on a cellphone, but he denied giving the phone to her. He also said the 11-year-old always wore short, revealing shorts and that she was “sexually provocative.” He said he never acted on the girl’s sexual advances.
Kaitlyn McConnell, spokesperson for the hospital, said that they were unaware that any sexual assault took place. She released a public statement, indicating that the hospital is in full cooperation with police as they continue to investigate.
“We are fully cooperating with the Springfield Police Department and are taking this matter seriously.”
Saffeels faces charges of furnishing pornographic material to a minor, statutory sodomy, statutory rape, and child molestation. He remains in jail on a $50,000 bond.
It’s still unclear how Saffeels knew the mother and the victims. Check back with CrimeOnline as additional details become available.
