A Lady Lake, Florida, father is accused of drowning his 17-month-old daughter because his wife was divorcing him.
The Orlando Sentinel reported that Jeremy Main, 38, turned himself in Monday and admitted to killing his daughter, Makenzie Main, saying that he “ruined his life.” Sumter County deputies noted that Jeremy was bleeding from the wrists when he came into the station.
“I killed my daughter and failed to kill myself,” he told deputies, according to the report.
Officers reportedly found Makenzie’s body in the master bathroom’s tub a half-hour before Jeremy turned himself in.
Lake County deputies said Jeremy’s wife, Holly Main, 37, contacted police at 9:30 a.m. and claimed her husband called her while she was at work and said he had drowned their daughter, according to WFTV.
“[The toddler’s death] does not appear to be an accident based on [the] language he used with the mother,” Lake County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Fred Jones told the local station.
The arrest document stated that Jeremy admitted to having “marital issues” with Holly. However, Holly’s mother declined to disclose what those issues were.
Jones said responding officers were distraught after locating the child’s body in the blood-stained tub.
“Underneath that uniform is a mother and father,” Jones said.
“In my 20 years in this line of work you still wonder what takes away a person’s humanity that would allow them to do something like this.”
Detectives said the couple’s daughters, ages 15 and 17, were in school at the time, the Sentinel reported.
A day before the incident, Jeremychanged his Facebook cover photo to him holding Makenzie, who was smiling and wearing a bathing suit, the local paper noted.
Jeremy was charged with first-degree murder. Prosecutors will determine whether they’ll seek the death penalty.
