A former Atlanta medical examiner is behind bars for reportedly giving opioids to patients in exchange for “sexual favors.”
Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that Joe Burton, an ex-medical examiner who currently works as a private consultant, landed on the radar of narcotics agents after they found out he’d been selling large amounts of oxycodone to patients, equalling around “108,850 individual doses of opioids” between 2015 to 2017, according to court documents.
“From their investigation, agents learned that many of the 108,850 individual doses of opioids were resold or diverted to abusers and addicts,” prosecutors claimed.
Federal authorities arrested Burton and also filed a forfeiture motion against his business off of Highway 9 in Alpharetta. The well-known doctor once served as a pathologist in several counties in the Atlanta-area.
Burton is currently out of jail on $50,000 bail.
