A 10-year-old Tennessee boy allegedly fatally stabbed himself in the chest with a kitchen knife after his mother beat and choked him with an extension cord.
The Commerical Appeal reported that police were called to a Frayser home Saturday afternoon and discovered Jaheim McKinzie suffering from chest wounds. The boy was rushed to a hospital where he was pronounced dead an hour later.
The child’s mother, Robin McKinzie, told first responders that she was whipping and choking him with an extension cord when he ran into the kitchen and began stabbing himself in the chest, an arrest affidavit detailed.
Neighbors told WHBQ that they saw Jaheim throwing rocks at the window of a vacant apartment Saturday afternoon. Robin called him inside 10 minutes before she ran out the apartment building screaming for help, witnesses recalled.
Jaheim was a fourth grader at Cornerstone Prep-Denver Campus. Grief counselors, community leaders, pastors, and police were present at the school Monday.
“I haven’t had to do something that difficult in a long time,” Pastor Deandre Brown said.
“He actually lived in Ridgecrest apartments, so I met the bus there this morning and rode to school with our kids who are from that apartment complex,” Cornerstone Prep-Denver Campus principal Michelle Lyons told the Commercial Appeal.
“I am going to be doing that for the next few days. We want to make sure they feel supported and know we are there for them from the beginning of the day to the end of the day.”
The local station reported Wednesday that Memphis-based rapper Yo Gotti will help pay for Jaheim’s funeral.
Robin McKinzie was charged with aggravated child abuse and remains jailed on $100,000 bond.
