A teenage mother in Iowa was arrested after police say her two small children were spotted running naked near a busy road this week.
According to WHO-TV, Adel police received a report around 9 p.m. Thursday of the two toddlers playing in their yard, close to a congested intersection along Highway 6.
The children’s mother, 18-year-old Jasmine Teed was reportedly asleep at the time.
Authorities say officers arrived at Teed’s home, where they found her in a back bedroom and reportedly had to physically push her before she finally awakened.
Police said a man stopped to assist the children before officers had arrived and was able to bring them back into the home.
He reportedly told police he heard a car horn as he drove through the intersection and pulled over when he saw the children.
When he stepped inside the residence with the toddlers, he said he called out for someone but there was no answer.
A criminal complaint noted the temperature was an additional factor in the inherent danger the toddlers faced by being outside and naked at night near a busy road.
The document alleged Teed did not provide her children “adequate supervision … and they were in substantial risk of injury being that close to a busy highway and the air temperature was 43 degrees while she was sound asleep.”
Teed was arrested and booked into the Dallas County Jail. She faces two counts of child endangerment.
Her children are reportedly under the supervision of their grandmother, Teed’s mother.
