A Texas man shot his wife in the chest before fatally shooting himself in the driveway of the home they had moved into less than two weeks before.

According to KHOU, Rachel Butler, 26, called police early Sunday morning to report that her husband, 39-year-old Jason Butler, had shot her in the chest and then shot himself at their Montgomery County home. She reportedly told police that the couple had gotten into an argument on the drive home from his high school reunion in Houston, and the altercation turned physical. Upon returning home, Jason Butler reportedly took a firearm from his truck and shot his wife before shooting himself.

Rachel Butler was transported to the hospital in critical condition. She is now reportedly listed in critical but stable condition and is expected to survive.

The couple reportedly had two young children.

According to court records obtained by the Houston Chronicle, Rachel Butler had filed for divorce a month ago, citing “discord or conflict of personalities.”

Friends told the newspaper that Jason Butler had gone through a rough patch but that they thought it was behind him.

The couple’s children were staying at a relative’s house and did not witness the shooting.
