A Missouri man is accused of dismembering his wife in a hotel room just days after she gave birth to their second child.
According to WDAF, 35-year-old Justin Rey allegedly cut his wife’s body into pieces last month in front of the couple’s 2-year-old and newborn children.
This week, prosecutors filed charges of abandoning a corpse and endangering the welfare of a child against the suspect.
After his arrest, Rey reportedly confessed to dismembering Jessica Rey in the bathtub of the Kansas City hotel room the family had been living in for about a month.
Police say he claimed his wife died after childbirth and he spent the following two days with her corpse in the room.
He allegedly cut up her body and put what he could fit of it into a cooler, either flushing or boiling the rest of her remains.
Rey told authorities his wife killed herself after childbirth, according to KSHB.
Authorities were first notified of the incident on October 24 when staff from a storage facility reported a suspicious person.
Documents indicate Rey was talking openly about his deceased wife as he moved items into a unit, at one point acknowledging her body was in a cooler on the premises.
“The suspect spontaneously informed the officers his wife was inside the cooler and looked to the direction of a red and white Igloo style cooler with wheels,” a court statement read.
Police reportedly found remains in two ice chests at the scene.
As CrimeOnline previously reported, Rey and his children initially appeared to be living in the storage facility. He allegedly did not have diapers and other essentials for the kids, who witnesses say appeared to have been neglected.
Rey remained in Johnson County jail as of the latest reports available. Prosecutors have requested a $100,000 bond.
