An Australian diplomat fell from a five story building on early Wednesday morning in New York City after playing a botched game of “trust fall.”
NBC New York reports that Julien Simpson, 30, fell from the terrace from a Manhattan building close to Clinton and East Houston streets. According to authorities, he was with numerous other people on top of the building to look at the Empire State Building, when he decided to playfully swing a married woman around, which apparently upset her husband.
Simpson wanted to make amends with the man and offered to play the “trust fall” game, in which someone leans backwards while the other person grabs their hands before they fall. As Simpson leaned backwards over the ledge of the building, he extended his hands, but lost his footing and slipped and fell backwards. Police noted that most of the people on the roof had been drinking.
Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull called Simpson’s death a tragedy. The victim’s family is asking for privacy at this time.
“Hearts go out to his family, but I cannot provide any more details,” Turnbull said to an Australian TV station.
Simpson was a diplomat with Australia’s United Nations mission. Check back with CrimeOnline as additional details become available.
