Authorities in Texas believe a high school teacher maintained a sexual relationship with a teenage former student.
According to Fox News, 23-year-old Michelle Schiffer was a world history teacher at Houston’s Cypress-Springs High School when she met the alleged victim, who is now 16 years old.
Police reports claim Schiffer and the unidentified teen, then 15, met at a local Chick-fil-A restaurant in July, leading to a sexual encounter.
School officials reportedly first became aware of the allegation when a student contacted Cheryl Henry, the school’s principal.
Court documents indicate the individual who provided the tip added that the alleged victim acknowledged he and Schiffer had been intimate, as reported by KTRK.
During an interview with investigators, Schiffer allegedly admitted having sex with the boy at a friend’s apartment.
She reportedly told police the two also smoked marijuana while together.
As KPRC reported, the Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District released a statement in response to the development.
“When the alleged actions of the staff member were learned, she was immediately removed from campus and placed on administrative leave,” the district stated. “We will continue to protect our students and not tolerate relationships of an inappropriate nature.”
Schiffer reportedly faces charges of sexual assault of a child and improper relationship with a student.
If convicted, she could face up to 20 years behind bars, according to the New York Daily News.
After her arrest, she was released from jail on $30,000 bond.
According to The Sun, the charges against Schiffer make her the third teacher from the school to face allegations since August 2016.
