A young mother was shot dead in her Pennsylvania home with three small children inside nearby.
Police were called to the home around 7 a.m. Saturday and found the victim, 24-year-old Samantha Stein, dead of unspecified causes, according to WHTM.
With only weeks left in the year, Spring Grove authorities note this was the city’s first homicide of 2017.
None of the minors present in the home were injured, according to officials, who noted that two were her boyfriend’s biological children and one was her own.
“It’s very safe,” said Southwestern Regional Police Sgt. Jamie Stalcup of the community. “Very safe.”
While no town is immune to crime, he said homicide is “very atypical” in Spring Grove.
“Usually it’s property crimes, domestics and traffic incidents,” Stalcup said.
As for locals concerned about the violent crime, he noted that there is no evidence of a threat to anyone else despite the fact that there has not been an arrest made in connection with the death.
“We don’t believe the community at large has cause to be alarmed,” he said. “We believe this was a targeted event and not random.”
Investigators say they have identified persons of interest in the case but have not named a suspect as of the latest reports available.
Police say the investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information that might be relevant is urged to call 717-846-1234.
Her family has established an online fundraiser through GoFundMe to accept donations for her final expenses and to benefit the children.
