A toy giveaway event meant to benefit needy kids in the Detroit area devolved into a huge physical fight over the weekend.
According to WXYZ, a woman was arrested after she brandished a knife at the crowded gathering Saturday night at the Tower Center Mall.
The unnamed 39-year-old suspect reportedly attended the event with two children.
Authorities say she pulled a knife on another attendee at around 7 p.m. The threatened 30-year-old woman reportedly escaped injury.
The annual event was organized this year by John Cromer, who noted how easily the emotions can take over during such a gathering.
“People are already under a lot of stress,” he said, adding that the disturbance “has nothing to do with toys making impacts.”
The brawl that ensued grew to include many of the hundreds gathered inside the mall. Reports indicate authorities dispatched a strike force to calm and disperse the crowd.
As Time reported, Cromer blamed the massive melee on the acts of a few instigators.
He told local reporters that such a situation only requires “some people to step on somebody’s shoes or to bump into somebody the wrong way and then a fight ensues.”
Police arrested the allegedly knife-wielding woman at the scene. It is unclear from available reports what charges she is expected to face.
The two juveniles with her were taken to the Detroit Police Second Precinct where they waited to be released into the custody of relatives.
