Newlywed tragedy: Groom dies in freak softball accident after appearing to be on the mend

A Florida man who had just returned from his honeymoon died tragically after he was hit in the head with a softball.

The New York Post reports that Greg Fusco, 37, suffered a skull fracture when a ball hit him in the temple during a softball tournament in the Nocatee area earlier this month, just weeks after marrying his wife Taylor.

According to WTLV, Fusco was pitching in the game when he was hit in the head, and had also suffered another, unspecified head injury earlier in the day.

“He was conscious after he was hit and walked off the field but when he got to the hospital he was unable to speak,” friend Courtney Hinkle wrote on a GoFundMe campaign page to raise funds for medical costs.

“His vitals looked good and he was able to squeeze his wife’s hand, so we did think he was going to make a recovery.”

But Fusco’s condition took a turn for the worse, and he died on December 16, less than a month after his wedding.

Now, his new bride is grieving.

The couple is described on the GoFundMe page as a pair “that just lights up your life and makes you feel like family- you know that they will always be there for you… you do anything to fight the good fight for them.”

WTLV reports that a charity softball fundraiser was held on December 23 in order to support Fusco’s widow and family.
