The discovery of a young girl alone in the cold this week led to an even more chilling scene, according to authorities in Utah
As KSTU reported, a man saw the 4-year-old girl wandering outside in Ogden Wednesday evening without proper clothing for the cold temperatures or any adult supervision.
According to Marcus King, the girl said something to him as he was on his way to a basketball game.
“I had heard a little girl’s voice inside the park, didn’t really think nothing of it,” he said, noting that she eventually got his attention.
She appeared to be playing in the snow, he said, but he immediately knew something wasn’t right.
“She didn’t have any jacket, no shoes, no parental supervision, and just took action then and took her inside,” he said.
King sought assistance in an area community center, where employees contacted authorities. He stayed on the scene until investigators found the girls’ 41-year-old mother dead on the floor of her nearby home.
“She was living alone with her mother,” said Ogden Police Lt. Tim Scott. “There is no sign of foul play. There are some pre-existing medical conditions that may have played a role.”
Authorities believe the woman died roughly a day before King noticed her daughter. As for the young girl, he said he is at least happy she remained safe in what he said was “not a good part” of Ogden.
As of the latest reports available, the Division of Children and Family Services was still attempting to find other relatives who might be able to take care of her.
