Authorities in Florida have arrested two teens in connection with a shooting Sunday that left another teenager dead.
According to WPLG, 16-year-old Eddy Moore and 15-year-old Keyondric Daniels were arrested Wednesday on suspicion of second-degree murder.
Police reports indicate the suspects approached 17-year-old Jatavious Williams Sunday afternoon at Blakey Park in Homestead as the victim was sitting on a bench.
The victim was a student at Killian High School, where he played on the football team, according to the Miami Herald.
Reports indicate the suspects were having a conversation with one of Williams’ friends when they shouted at him. The victim allegedly engaged in a verbal confrontation with the teens before they drew their guns and opened fire.
The suspects reportedly fled the scene on foot after the shooting.
Initial police reports suggested three gunmen were involved in the incident. Only two suspects were named in Wednesday’s update.
Both suspects had already amassed an extensive list of juvenile arrests, according to authorities.
Daniels’ prior charges include grand theft auto, armed robbery and battery. Moore has been arrested for drug possession, carrying a concealed weapon and trespassing.
They were arrested following days of pleas by community leaders, activists and law enforcement for anyone with information to come forward.
Reports indicate Williams was expecting the birth of a child.
While Miami-Dade Police Director Juan Perez lauded the agency’s officers for nabbing the suspects, he expressed dismay over the cycle of violence among local youth.
“We have a long way to go as a community in preventing these occurrences,” he wrote. “Enough.”
