A Spanish teacher in Passaic, New Jersey, is accused of offering two teen students a better grade if they provided him with pictures of their penises.
According to NorthJersey.com, a Passaic High School student, identified only as Ro.C., claimed he agreed to Jose Maria’s request to send a picture of his privates in an exchange for a better grade. However, a probable cause affidavit indicated that Ro.C. provided the teacher with a picture of a penis he had gotten from off the internet.
The paper reported that Ro.C. also accused Maria of picking him and another teen up to get them Chinese food and alcohol.
The illicit conversations reportedly occurred between 2010 and 2012. However, one of the victims’ relatives only recently found the text messages and contacted police, according to NJ.com.
At one point, R.NM, a mother to one of the victims, reportedly confronted Maria about the explicit texts. Court documents said it was then that the Spanish teacher confirmed the texts were real and asked for forgiveness.
“Ro.C. said his mother confronted Mr. Maria who admitted it, said he would kill himself and asked her not to go to the police,” the affidavit stated.
Ro.C. later reached out to Maria and the Spanish teacher allegedly claimed that he “made a mistake” and that he had acted on “impulse” when asking the teen for pictures of his penis.
Maria was arrested Wednesday and charged with four counts of endangering the welfare of a child and one count of official misconduct. The 38-year-old has been released on the condition that he checks in weekly and has no contact with the victims are anyone else younger than 18.
A Passaic School District spokesman told NorthJersey.com that Maria has been a teacher since 2005. Following his arrest, the district suspended him–with pay–from his $75,513 teaching position.
NJ.com noted that if indicted, his suspension will become unpaid.
