An Ohio girl was shot by her brother at their home recently, and their mother is facing criminal charges.
According to the Mansfield News Journal, the incident occurred Saturday afternoon and involved a 4-year-old girl who sustained injuries officials do not expect to be life threatening.
The gunshot wounds were caused by her 8-year-old brother, according to Ashland County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Carl Richert. He said the boy shot his sister “multiple times.”
Reports indicate the victim was transported from the scene in Hayesville to University Hospitals Samaritan Medical Center.
From there, she was taken to a medical center in Cleveland, where she was listed in stable condition as of the latest updates available.
A news release from the sheriff’s department showed she is expected to recover from her injuries.
Both children have since been removed from their mother’s custody and the Hayesville home, according to police. They were placed in the custody of county officials.
Police did not reveal the circumstances surrounding the shooting itself, as reported by WLWT.
It remains unclear where the girl was hit and who owned the firearm used in the incident.
An initial police report offered little additional information, though authorities say further details will be available this week. Authorities say the investigation remains ongoing.
Richert said the case has been presented to the Ashland County Prosecutor’s Office, which will review it Monday.
