A Kentucky man who claims his wife committed suicide has been arrested in connection with her death, WKYT-TV reports.
It was the second case of a husband allegedly killing his wife this week in Kentucky.
Investigators on Wednesday descended on the home of Joshua and Stephanie Davenport in Corbin, Kentucky, and found the woman behind the house with multiple gunshot wounds.
Joshua’s mother told authorities the death was a suicide, but detectives suspect that Joshua had shot Stephanie after an argument.
The couple had only been married for five months, according to WKYT-TV.
Police located a .38 caliber pistol at the scene and Joshua was subsequently arrested and charged with murder, the Lexington Herald Leader reports.
Despite the fact that Stephanie had two gunshot wounds, Joshua is continuing to assert that she killed herself, according to Sheriff Gilbert Acciardo.
“He is maintaining it was a suicide,” Acciardo said. “I was up here during the interviews yesterday and he went to jail maintaining that she had killed herself.”
Joshua pleaded not guilty at a court appearance on Friday. Another court date is scheduled for Tuesday morning.
Stephanie’s mother told WKYT-TV that the couple had been married for only five months and that their relationship soured because of Joshua’s alleged drug use.
Joshua has an extensive criminal history with multiple drug cases going back 13 years, according to the television station.
He is now being held in the Laurel County Detention Center on a $500,000 bond.
In a separate case, another Kentucky man was also accused of killing his wife this week. Prosecutors charged Colin Montgomery, 29, with the murder of Jennifer Montgomery, 27, the Lexington Herald Leader reports.
