A couple in Harris County, Texas, is accused of leaving their 4-year-old daughter in a hot car for nearly 40 minutes as they ate lunch at a restaurant.
Antonio Hurtado, 31, and Brenda Hurtado, 30, were arrested Sunday after police allegedly caught the mother taking the unconscious girl out of the car. Police were called to 2400 block of FM 1960 after someone spotted the child alone in a locked car with barely-opened windows, according to KIAH.
EMS officials reportedly told officers that the little girl was limp and sweaty when Brenda pulled her from the car. The couple supposedly told officers that they were all in the restaurant when the 4-year-old became restless, leading Antonio to put her in the car to sleep before returning to the restaurant.
Temperatures in Houston reached 81 degrees on the day in question. In 2018, one child has died from vehicular heatstroke in the United States, according to No Heat Stroke.
Investigators believe the child was left in the car from 30 to 40 minutes. Harris County Precinct 4 Constable Mark Herman’s Office told The Houston Chronicle that the girl is in good condition and that she was released into other family members’ care.
Police arrested the Texas couple and charged them with child endangerment. Latest reports indicated that they were each being held on $1,000 bond.
The newspaper reported that Child Protective Services will determine custody at a later date. For now, the parents are barred from contacting their daughter as an emergency order is in place.
