Police in Maryland say a 22-year-old woman brutally murdered her great-grandmother.
According to Fox News, Shannon Marci Jefferson Lozano was arrested and is expected to face charges including first-degree murder in connection with the death of 80-year-old Doris Elizabeth Shelton late last week.
Montgomery County police say the victim’s husband found her Friday afternoon in their house. He reportedly later told authorities that he saw Lozano running away from the scene.
In a statement, police reported that “at approximately 3:19 pm, the victim’s husband called 911 to report that he had come home and found his wife unresponsive and not breathing.”
The suspect was reportedly arrested by Maryland-National Capital Park police a short distance from the Wheaton area home.
Police say that during questioning she acknowledged some level of responsibility for the death.
“Major Crimes detectives responded to the scene and began to investigate the homicide,” the police statement read. “Lozano was interviewed by investigators at Police Headquarters and made a statement implicating herself in the assault of her great-grandmother.”
Upon an “initial investigation by officers,” police said they observed “apparent trauma” to the elderly victim’s body.
“Officers began to investigate the death as a homicide,” the statement continued.
Records related to the case indicate Shelton sustained injuries caused by blunt force and cutting.
“The victim’s body has been transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner to confirm the cause and manner of death,” police said.
As of the latest updates available, Lozano was in jail without bond ahead of a court hearing set for Monday.
No additional details, including a suspected motive, were available.
