Authorities in California say a man violently attacked his parents with a knife Friday night, killing his mother and critically injuring his father.
According to KTLA, 30-year-old Yihong Peng led deputies on a short foot pursuit when the Orange County Sheriff’s Department responded to the report of an armed man near an intersection in San Juan Capistrano.
Upon arrival at the scene at around 10:30 p.m., deputies say they spotted the suspect, who took off running, as well as both victims lying nearby.
In addition to the suspect’s mother, 59-year-old Wei Ping Shen, and his father, identified only as a man in his fifties, authorities say they found a knife at the scene.
The deceased woman lived in San Clemente, according to officials.
As Fox News reported, investigators have not yet announced a possible motive for the attack and no additional details about the crime itself were released in an initial statement.
The male victim is expected to survived but the female was pronounced dead at the scene despite what a sheriff’s department statement described as “extensive life-saving efforts” performed by first responders.
Peng was arrested late Friday evening and taken into custody with bail set at $1 million. He is expected to face charges including murder.
Police say the investigation of this case remains ongoing.
