An Alabama father is facing multiple charges, including murder, for allegedly striking his 2-year-old daughter in the head with an exercise weight, killing her.
Ira Reid, 38, is accused of throwing the weight Saturday morning during an argument with the child’s mother. The child was sitting in the car. As the mother got into her car to leave, Reid hurled the weight through the window, hitting the toddler, WBMA reported.
According to AL.com, police were called to the 1000 block of Manor Circle near Bessemer, where they found the 2-year-old unresponsive and with injuries to her head and face. The child, identified by WBRC as Laila Reid, was pronounced dead at a local hospital a short time later.
“I just heard disagreement and fussing,” neighbor Timothy Fletcher told the news station. “And I came out and the child was laying on the driveway.”
Reid was arrested at the scene and allegedly admitted to throwing the weight that killed his daughter. It’s not immediately known what the pair were arguing about Saturday morning.
“A child’s life should never be taken by anyone’s hand, most certainly their own father,” Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Randy Christian said, according to AL.com.
“How a father could be angry enough to do something that even put their child in danger is beyond comprehension. It’s gut-wrenching. God take that precious innocent little girl into your loving arms and somehow give peace to the family left behind.”
Reid was charged with murder, shooting or throwing a dangerous object into a vehicle, second-degree domestic violence, and third-degree domestic violence. He’s being held at Jefferson County Jail on $165,000 bond.
