A Kansas man is facing a possible death sentence if convicted of capital murder charges connected to his pregnant girlfriend’s death earlier this year.
Prosecutors accuse 26-year-old Devonte Dominique Wash of killing 23-year-old Ashley Harlan and their unborn child in January.
As CrimeOnline previously reported, Harlan was killed on the day she was to learn the baby’s sex.
Her body was found January 30 in an Olathe townhouse she had moved into earlier that month, according to the Kansas City Star.
Harlan, who was about 20 weeks along in her pregnancy at the time of her death, had reportedly made the recent move in an effort to be closer to the baby’s father.
Wash was arrested by authorities in Wyandotte County on Tuesday and booked into jail before he was transported to Johnson County jail two days later where his bond was set at $5 million.
As Johnson County District Attorney Steve Howe explained, his office is pursuing a capital murder case based on a state law allowing such charges in prosecuting crimes in which more than one person is either killed or placed at great risk of death by the actions of a defendant.
One of the victim’s friends expressed mixed emotions upon hearing that the suspect was arrested.
“I’m heartbroken because she and her baby were taken from us,” Kait Beeton said. “But I’m relieved to know he’s behind bars and will remain there for life.”
Anyone with additional information about this case is asked to contact the Olathe Police Department by calling 913-971-6950 or the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-8477.
