A Texas father was arrested Wednesday for allegedly leaving his 18-month-old daughter in a 112-degree car outside a grocery store in Baytown.
From The Houston Chronicle, Baytown Fire Department officials found the toddler outside a Kroger in a car with its windows rolled up and the engine off. She was reportedly asleep under blankets when she was found.
An onlooker called 911, leading firefighters to unlock the car and retrieve the child, according to KPRC.
Miraculously, a prosecutor said the girl was all right, though her cheeks were flushed and she was sweating when she was rescued.
“[They] asked him how long he had been in the store and he said, ‘Not long,’” the prosecutor said, adding that he initially claimed he was in the store for 10 minutes.
According to KTRK, court officials said the child was left in the car for 18 minutes as father Gene Curry, Jr., 24, shopped at Kroger. The prosecutor said a temperature gauge inside the car read 112 degrees.
Charged with endangering a child, Curry’s grandmother told KTRK that the family will not be bailing him out of jail as there’s no excuse for Wednesday’s incident.
Curry remained jailed on $1,000 bail as of Friday morning. The Chronicle reported that he’s also father to a 2-year-old and shares custody with the mother. When released, he’s barred from having unsupervised visitation with either child.
