Authorities in Nevada arrested a Washoe County high school teacher on suspicion of maintaining a sexual relationship with a minor.
According to KOLO, 33-year-old Maren Oates was placed on administrative leave from the Academy of Arts, Careers and Technology following her arrest on Thursday.
She reportedly taught graphic design at the Reno school described on its website as “an advanced career technical education academy” that “provides the opportunity for students to determine what career or college pathway they want to pursue in post-secondary education.”
The suspect was booked into Washoe County Jail the same day and is expected to face criminal charges including one count of a school employee engaged in sex with a pupil.
The school district issued a statement acknowledging the ongoing investigation.
“Washoe County School Police are investigating allegations that a District employee engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a student,” the district stated. “The employee in question has been placed on administrative leave.”
Insisting that the “safety and security of our students and staff is our number one priority,” the statement went on to advice that the school district “cannot discuss personnel issues.”
The Daily Mail reports that she was being held on $20,000 bail as of Saturday morning.
Additional details regarding the nature of the charges or allegations against the teacher were not immediately available.
