A New York City man is accused of repeatedly stabbing his pregnant girlfriend, killing their unborn child.
Liv Abreu—who was 26 weeks pregnant—managed to drag herself to a neighbor’s apartment and call 911 following Tuesday’s 12:30 a.m. attack. Officials told the New York Daily News that Oscar Alvarez, 30, stabbed Abreu, 30, six times in the chest and once in the side inside their Bronx apartment.
“I heard a scream, but it didn’t register because I know they always argue,” a neighbor told the New York Post.
“That’s just a shame. I just feel sorry for her … and the baby.”
Though the Daily News reported that Alvarez had stabbed Abreu at least seven times, police told WABC that the expecting mother was stabbed more than 30 times in her stomach.
The U.S. Army veteran is in critical condition but expected to survive. However, multiple outlets reported that her unborn child didn’t survive the barbaric attack.
“She was so excited about the baby, both of them were,” a neighbor told the Daily News. “This was going be their first.”
The Post reported that Abreu used Instagram to document her pregnancy. In April, the mom-to-be posted a sonogram showing the baby’s face.
Alvarez, who allegedly fled in his girlfriend’s car, reportedly surrendered to police at around 4:30 a.m. and claimed the stabbing was an “accident.” Despite this, authorities charged him with attempted murder, assault with intent to cause serious physical injury, assault, and criminal possession of a weapon.
It’s not immediately known what led up to Tuesday’s deadly stabbing.
