An Alabama woman is behind bars after she reportedly kept her deceased infant inside a hotel room freezer in Dothan last week.
Al.com reports that Amanda Gail Oakes, 36, the mother of the 8-month-old Carlton James “CJ” Oakes, reportedly kept the baby boy in a freezer for around five or six days. Authorities found the infant inside a freezer in a hotel room at the InTown Suites in Dothan.
The father of the child, Carlton James Mathis, 28, was also charged in connection to the infant’s death. Earlier this month, Florida SWAT officers shot Mathis four times after he reportedly ran from authorities in Bronson, Florida. According to AJC, Mathis is accused of killing the baby, then fleeing to Florida. Authorities caught up to him while he held a gun to a driver’s head. He was later detained and treated for the gunshot wounds, then transferred to jai.
Detectives later discovered CJ while searching for Oakes. The Hall County Sheriff’s Office tipped off the Dothan police that the couple stayed in the Dothan area, and that the pair’s infant son was likely deceased.
“A search warrant was executed at that location and the body of 6-month-old Carlton James Oakes was recovered from the freezer,” Dothan police said.
Oakes was detained and taken to the Houston County Jail on a manslaughter charge and abuse of a corpse charge. She remains behind bars without bond. Mathis is at the Hall County Jail without bail on charges of abuse of a corpse, drug possession, weapon possession by a convicted felon, child neglect, and assault.
It’s still unclear how CJ died.
