A Georgia family is grieving the tragic death of a 5-month-old baby who died while in the care of a babysitter, a longtime family friend.

WSB-TV reports that a 5-month old infant, Paige, died after her babysitter’s German Shepherd is believed to have attacked her during the night.

Police told the news station that Paige was sleeping at a babysitter’s home on Tuesday night. After he put Paige to bed, he himself fell asleep in another room.

The presumed attack took place sometime before 3 a.m., when someone called 911 to report the baby had been killed.

Paige’s mother told WSB-TV that she couldn’t understand what happened, since the dog had known the baby since she was born.

“He ate by us, he slept by us, he followed us and sometimes I had her in her car seat and he would go over and check on her and walk away. I never heard of anything like this,” George said.

Asked by a reporter what she thinks might have happened, George replied, “I can’t even say. I just gave it to God and I told him to figure this all out for me.”

The German Shepherd has since been euthanized, and no charges have been filed at this time.

The family has launched a GoFundMe campaign to help raise money for funeral expenses.
