Career criminal accused of trying to snatch toddler from stroller: ‘I was just playing with the baby. I’ve done this before’

A Brooklyn man with a lengthy rap sheet was arrested Thursday after allegedly trying to snatch a 2-year-old boy from a stroller as his mother pushed him across an intersection.

WPIX reports that Matthew Waly, 27, approached the 32-year-old mother at Prospect Park at around 9 p.m. and grabbed her stroller. The toddler’s father was nearby at the time and reportedly joined the scuffle, resulting in Wally fleeing the scene.

“Give me your baby,” Waly said to the mother, according to police.

The New York Post reports that the father chased the suspect, who was arrested moments after he ran into a police officer.

I was just playing with the baby. I’ve done this before in Manhattan and I never had a problem,” Waly allegedly told cops.

Upon hearing the allegations in court, Waly reportedly blurted out, “Oh s**t, that’s crazy, that’s wild.” The outburst led the judge to demand his silence, the newspaper wrote.

Police previously told the Post that Waly has been arrested 24 times for charges ranging from assault and petit larceny to robbery and forcible touching.

Waly is charged with attempted kidnapping and acting in a manner injurious to a child. He’s being held on $100,000 bail.
