Authorities said a U.K. police dog is “recovering well” after reportedly being stabbed three times while responding to a domestic disturbance.
According to Derbyshire Live, a police dog named Axle underwent surgery following Wednesday night’s ordeal. Residents told the newspaper that the stabbing occurred after residents spotted a man acting in an “extremely angry” way.
Law enforcement officers responded to the scene, described as a ” “domestic incident,” with the police dog in tow.
Police initially reported that the pup was stabbed four times, but new information suggests the dog was stabbed three times.
It is unclear exactly when during the incident the dog was injured. At one point, police used a helicopter to track down the suspect, who the BBC reports is a 27-year-old man.
“Suspect located thanks to National Police Air Service Birmingham and safely detained,” local police wrote on Twitter.
“Thanks to Derbyshire dog section for invaluable support and wishing a speedy recovery to PD Axle who was injured during the arrest.”
Kylaa Jadee, who lived down the street from where the incident unfolded, told the local newspaper that she saw a damaged police car with its tires slashed. While Jadee claimed to have witnessed a bloodied female officer crying, authorities said no officers were injured.
