A Los Angeles-area man allegedly shot to death his wife and their son before killing himself in a murder-suicide that has devastated relatives and friends, KNBC-TV reports.
Authorities were called to the family’s condo in Redondo Beach late Wednesday night for a report of gunshots being fired.
Investigators identified the dead as Marc and Ivana Waz, both 48 years old, and their 13-year-old son Makani.
Friends say Marc Waz, an environmental scientist, had become depressed of late because he was in constant pain from a back injury that occurred during a construction accident.
“He was miserable,” neighbor Reggie Lucero told the television station. “He was a good friend. He would come into my house, and we would have a glass of wine and we’d talk. I’m just sorry, but I’m not surprised. There was no answer for him.”
Marc Waz reportedly took medication intended to help relieve the pain, but Lucero said doctors “couldn’t do anything for him.”
Police officers arrived to the condo around 10:15 p.m. Wednesday. They were able to peek inside the residence and see a body, the television station reports.
Officers then entered the condo and found two other bodies.
According to her LinkedIn profile, Ivana Waz had worked about four years as a product management specialist at Mattel.
In a statement, a Mattel spokesperson said Ivana was a “cherished member” of the company and would be missed.
“Everyone at Mattel is immensely saddened by this tragic loss,” the statement read.
Family friend Jennifer Baer said Ivana had wanted her husband to seek help for depression.
Ivana and Marc were reportedly high school sweethearts and both graduated from UC Berkeley. Ivana had emigrated from Serbia when she was 12 years old.
Ivana had been the manager of her son’s youth soccer team, which planned to hold a memorial service for her and Makani on Friday.
